It was 2009, I finished middle school and my brother finished elementary school. Around the house, we found a Florida guide book and I had begun to bore my father that I wanted to go to Florida. As I said in a previous article, I can be very stubborn and a pain in the ass. I had seen some amazing pictures, I wanted to take the plane and swim in the ocean: Florida seemed just the perfect place! The day I gave the oral exam and I officially finished middle school we all went to eat pizza together to celebrate. I remember perfectly that my parents gave us a paper bag each, there were aeroplane tickets inside. My brother read Bologna – Rome and shouted “Wow let’s go to Rome!”. However, I was speechless. There were two tickets in the envelope, and I picked up the one on which it said Rome – Miami. I just said ” No Enry, let’s go to Florida “. It was June 25, 2009 my parents haven’t been able to amaze like that often.
The following month and a half passed very quickly and in the blink of an eye, it was time to leave. I was terrified about the metal detector because I had braces and, even though everyone told me that the metal detector doesn’t pick it up, I was terrified. Probably, I was mostly scared of being controlled, I don’t know for what reason. I got through security in a very quiet way and this meant I could relax. However, in Rome, they checked random people and guess who they stopped? Me, of course. I think they were very disappointed with what they found in my backpack: sanitary pads, sanitary pads and sanitary pads. Clearly, I was also terrified of running out of sanitary pads during the flight.
And so we left. In my opinion, the flight was fantastic, it was great to see the ocean from so high above. According to my brother’s opinion, it was a little bit less fantastic: we understood that he was frightened of flying, but that he would be tense for eleven hours as if he had a broom up his backside wasn’t even in the back of our heads. Besides, as my grandfather always says, what do you have to worry about? If the plane comes down, it’s not yours. Among other things, we also had to change the route at some point because there was a tropical storm and therefore, instead flying over the Atlantic coast, we crossed the ocean. Poor Enry, now that I think about it, he must have had such bad time!
The main stops on our trip were Orlando, Cape Canaveral, the Everglades, Keys Islands and Miami. The Universal Studios in Orlando were a lot of fun and luckily it was an early stop. I say luckily because if we had made it at the end I don’t know if I would have liked them so much. As a wide-eyed adolescent girl, I was excited about big cities and the things that seemed to be cool, like the Universal Studios and Miami, but I had no idea what a sunset on the Everglades looked like, or the feelings that can be experienced by visiting the Kennedy Space Center or by swimming in the coral reef.
But, even more importantly, I had not considered barracudas.
